Jerry Jones: It was clear a change was needed

The Cowboys have moved on from Matt Eberflus after just one season as defensive coordinator.

On Tuesday, the Cowboys officially announced the news and owner/GM Jerry Jones released a statement, giving his reasoning for the change.

"Having known Matt Eberflus for decades now, we have tremendous respect and appreciation for him as a coach and a person. After reviewing and discussing the results of our defensive performance this season, though, it was clear that change is needed. This is the first step in that process and we will continue that review as it applies to reaching our much higher expectations."

Eberflus, who was with the Cowboys as linebackers coach and passing game coordinator from 2011-17, returned this year after a three-season stint as head coach of the Bears.

However, the Cowboys defense allowed 30.0 points per game for the first time in team history and ranked last in pass defense, allowing 251.5 yards per game.

The Cowboys seemingly made some strides after the Quinnen Williams trade on Nov. 4 and the team won three straight games. However, in the final five games, the Cowboys lost four of five, allowed 30 points or more in the four losses. And of those games, only one opponent (Chargers) actually made the playoffs.
