FRISCO, Texas – The Cowboys have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with former Eagles QB Sam Howell.

Howell, 25, was a fifth-round pick of the Commanders in the 2022 NFL Draft. Since then, he's played for three more NFL franchises, most recently in Philadelphia.

Across his four seasons in the NFL, Howell has played in 20 total games, starting 18. In his career, Howell has completed 404 of his 645 passing attempts for 4,139 yards, 22 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.

The first start of Howell's NFL career came against the Cowboys in Week 18 of the 2022 season, as Howell led the Commanders to a 26-6 victory. He finished completing 11 of 19 passing attempts for 169 yards, a touchdown and an interception. On the ground, Howell added five carries for 35 yards and a rushing touchdown.

After two years with the Commanders, Washington traded Howell, a fourth-round pick and a sixth-round pick to the Seahawks in exchange for a third-round pick and a fifth-round pick. Howell went on to play in two games for Seattle.

Last offseason, the Minnesota Vikings traded a fifth-round pick for Howell and a fifth-round pick from the Seahawks. A few months later, the Vikings traded Howell and a sixth-round pick to the Eagles for a fifth-round pick and a seventh-round pick.

If the Cowboys and Howell put pen to paper when free agency begins, the Cowboys now have four quarterbacks on the roster in Dak Prescott, Joe Milton, Will Grier and Howell. Last offseason, Dallas traded a fifth-round pick to the Patriots for Milton, who was Prescott's backup for the 2025 season.

It's not often teams carry four quarterbacks on the roster during the season, meaning there could be a competition upcoming in the quarterback room behind Prescott during the offseason program and training camp.
